You may have been wondering if there is an animal on the planet with a lifespan of only one day. The truth is that there is one animal, that when it gets its wings, it lives only for a few hours. Let’s meet the mayfly.
Despite their name, mayflies are active during the warmer months of the year, not just May. They tend to be gray, yellow, or brown and have long, thin abdomens.
There are about 2500 mayfly species worldwide. In most species death ensues shortly after mating and oviposition (egg deposition). Females deposit eggs in the water. Mayflies spend most of their lives in the water as nymphs and then emerge as adults for only a short while. Adults will live only a day or so, but the aquatic larvae lives for about a year.
