Which are the Scandinavian countries and where does this term come from? The name Scandinavia originally referred to the former Danish, now Swedish, region of Scania. Scandinavia and Scandinavian entered usage in the late 18th century, being introduced by the early linguistic and cultural Scandinavist movement. This is an ideology that supports various degrees of cooperation among the Scandinavian countries.

Simply put, the term Scandinavia in local usage covers the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden.

Greenland, which is a Danish territory, and the Faroe Islands, which is a self-governing part of Denmark, are also included in the list.
